Our Most Popular Dance Form

Dangi Nritya (Kahalya) Internationally popular Dangi nritya is a favorite dance of tribal of Dang (south Gujarat). The tribe kokans, warlis and bhils perform this dance on every joyous occasion like Diwali, Holi or wedding. Typically tribal way, men and women make a chain holding hands and dance for hours. The main Kahalya (sharnai) player changes tune and the dancers change their chala (Movements).

  • Origin: The Dangs district (tribal region).

  • Style: Performed by the tribal community. Dancers link hands to form a chain (or Shrinkala) and move in intricate, serpentine patterns. It is very energetic and can involve over 25 different steps or Chalas.

  • Origin: Chorwad region of Saurashtra.

  • Style: Primarily performed by women from the Koli and Kharva communities (coastal areas). Dancers strike the floor rhythmically with a long wooden rod fitted with a square block, called a Tippani, which was originally used to flatten lime floors during house construction.

  • Style: A traditional folk dance-drama that involves highly skilled stunts. Dancers (often men performing as women as well) balance multiple pots (up to 7-9) on their heads while dancing, often on the edge of a sword or pieces of glass.

  • Significance: It is a professional performance art and a form of social drama, reflecting the life and issues of the communities.
